FORM - MOVEMENT: Movement is integral to the human form, from the way that we engage with one another, to how we experience the world and our senses, such as through dance, intimacy, body language and moving our body in nature βΆ Movement is also vital to our emotional progress as individuals, defying stagnation through evolution and metaphorical shapeshifting βΆ Movement is how we experience the world and communicate with one another, using our bodies as vehicles to do so βΆ We are ever evolving, moving, seeking, feeling beings.

Shanae Duncan
Artist Statement | 'Limbs' is a playful interpretation of the human form, stripping the figure back into simple organic shapes. The forms are abstracted and intertwined to create a sense of movement, personality and energy, taking inspiration from the body and our environment around us, without depicting either literally.
Artist Bio | Shanae Duncan is a visual artist from Meanjin (Brisbane), creating playful, bright and experimental work across painting and digital design. Her practice is inspired by abstraction, colour and the little moments of everyday life. She transforms these moments into bold, abstract compositions that are expressive, energetic and evoke feeling.
Laura Brinin
Artist Statement | The works on mirror emerged from a series of anonymous conversations held in a makeshift bedroom within a gallery. An annual practice spanning 10 years, visitors were invited to sleep over with the artist and share secrets. Though, as conversations often do, the exchanges wandered through confession, gossip, memory and everyday chit-chat. Fragments of these encounters were collected and removed from their original context, then transcribed onto mirrors.
Artist Bio | Laura is a Meanjin-based artist and curator whose practice explores relationality through conversation, secrets, pop culture and the spectrum of girlhood.
Rhianna Phillips
Artist Statement | This collection of drawings explores the playfulness and fluidity of the naked form. Rhianna uses scale and texture to bring her figure drawings larger than life. The works speak to the freedom in being unclothed and unrestricted, viewing the body as a moving and expressive vessel.
Artist Bio | Rhianna Phillips is a Magandjin / Brisbane Based artist and facilitator working across photography and drawing. Figure drawing allows Rhianna a playful opportunity to conceptually inhabit other bodies and tell stories through gestural mark-making.
Jo Isabel Klima
Artist Statement | My practice explores temporality and materiality through expanded painting and abstraction, focusing on subtle shifts in light and perception within the architectural environment. This interest in the inherent qualities of light is explored through materials such as glass and plexiglass, experimenting with colour, transparency, luminosity, pattern and repetition. The artworks are abstracted self-portraits that investigate how a place shapes perception and consciousness itself. The qualities of light, materiality, and rhythm become intertwined with my own presence within it. The work offers viewers an invitation to reflect on how our experience of light moving is our experience of living.
Artist Bio | Jo Isabel Klima is a Meanjin/Brisbane-based emerging artist exploring temporality and materiality through expanded painting and abstraction. She recently completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Queensland College of Art, with Distinction, and received the Outstanding Achievement in Major Award in Painting. She has exhibited work in group shows at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery, Side Gallery, Vacant Assembly, Waiting Room Gallery, Petrie Terrace Gallery and Griffith University. She has also been selected a finalist in the Du Rietz Art Awards at Gympie Regional Gallery.
Frances Caro
Artist Statement | This collection of hand-crafted prints explores the symbolism of transformation, femininity and openness to the universe, created during Frances's artist residency in Portugal. Francesβs Sirens are tokens of transformation, surrounded by whirls of wildflowers and whimsy - morphing between woman, bird and fish. Her Anthropomorphic Vessels are sculpted to signal receptivity to the universe's wonder, gifts, treasures and stories.
Artist Bio | Frances is a visual artist based in Magandjin (Brisbane), Australia. Her work is a contemporary take on traditional drawing, created through a romanticist lens. In her practice, she explores themes of object importance, intimacy, the body and storytelling. Frances believes that the personal is the most deeply profound - our bodies, stories and rituals are universal, and there is power in sharing and relating. Frances studied a Bachelor of Fine Art (Studio Practice) and Business (Marketing) at the Queensland College of Art, graduating in 2021. Currently, she works as a visual artist, life drawing facilitator & marketing consultant. She has exhibited in Australia and internationally in Greece, Portugal and Norway.
Justine Wake
Artist Statement | The works created for Form are responses to tales of flying spirits, angels, shape-shifters, harpies and sirens across human history. The figures rise, fall and rise, maybe like breathing, maybe like the tides. The work calls to the many depictions and descriptions of these beings that offer a way to connect what is known and earthly with what is beyond our comprehension.
Artist Bio | Justine is a practising artist and arts psychotherapist living and working on unceded Turrbal and Jagera lands. She has over 30 years of experience exhibiting and making. Justineβs work is a quest to link up seemingly disparate things to create curiosities and conversations. She works across a wide range of materials and surfaces, pushing the boundaries of what a medium can do, following experiment as much as intention.
Lawn Bowls
Artist Statement | The glass pieces in this series were made through a process of recalling and recording the movements and sensations experienced on a walk. The small glimpses into memory have no apparent sequence; like memory, they flicker between each other in layers of pearlescent line. The story of this particular walk was obscured by time, this process of making and how the materials interacted and changed with or without my control.
Artist Bio | Finn of Lawn Bowls is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in the medium of kiln formed glass. She also works with textiles, found materials and printed media. She is interested in how decorative objects are experienced. Her use of bright colours and playful character depictions is in constant dialogue with how they exist in domestic spaces vs public spaces.
Aaron Butt
Artist Statement | Aaron Butt's body of work explores the movement of figures through the landscape. Examining Ernest Shackelton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-1917), where movement equated to survival, diminutive figures move through landscapes that are not hospitable to their bodies. The work is part of a broader exploration of risk-taking by men in the Twentieth Century, such as exploration with questionable motives, examining the ideologies and lack of consideration that led to them. The work positions movement as potentially absurd and meaningless, such as three week marches only to turn around and return to the starting point, as well as movement as a form of power and control, such as 'The March' where one figure, presumably Shackelton, 'oversees' a group hauling a lifeboat over the ice while photographer Frank Hurley (and the audience) watch.
Artist Bio | Aaron Butt is an artist based in Ningi, near Bribie Island in South-East Queensland. In 2017, he was awarded a Master of Fine Arts (Research) from Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Since then, he has exhibited in both solo and group shows locally and interstate. His work is held in public collections including the QUT Art Museum, Sunshine Coast Council and the City of Moreton Bay, as well as in numerous private collections.
Emily Devers
Artist Statement | For FORM, Emily examines form β human and vessel β through weight, stance and balance. Each work considers how shape and colour assert themselves over each other in space, and how that assertion can be an intentional interruption, settling into a newly balanced configuration.
Artist Bio | Emily Devers is a Naarm/Melbourne based painter, muralist, designer, and arts consultant who uses art to draw attention to systems of delineation, and articulate and dismantle the many divisions between public and private. She does this by employing contemporary collage practices to construct public and gallery artworks. Her paintings aim to amplify the thresholds between object and space, realism and abstraction.β¨β¨ Her tenure as a brand designer and public artist spans almost 2 decades, so to each artwork she brings a deep understanding of how images play a role in perception and power. With both parents in the advertising world, Emily's grown up with a love of how intentional applied design can truly impact individuals and their environments. Emily holds a Certificate IV in Visual Art, a Bachelor's in Fine Art (Visual Art) and is a current Master of Visual Art. She has exhibited in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and San Francisco, and has participated in residencies across Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Spain, North Africa, and multiple locations in the U.S.A.
